Mars Square Uranus 6*14*25 - 6*17*25

Originally, I was not going to post on this particular aspect but it feels deserving of a brief head's up so here goes.

Mars is in the final degrees of Leo, the fixed fire sign. Uranus is in the final degrees of Taurus, the fixed earth sign. Over the weekend they will form an exact 90 degree angle known as a square. Squares in astrology are "hard" aspects. They are dynamic, meaning they make things very uncomfortable. So uncomfortable, we are forced to change something about our approach in order to manage the energies of the planets involved. While this aspect is short-lived, when looked at in the context of the other changes we have been experiencing recently, it can express in powerful ways.

Mars in Leo

Mars in Leo: Mars is the planet of self assertion. It is how we go about getting our needs met. It is our yang energy, out in the world doing things. Mars is named after the Roman god of war, so in its lower expression, it can be aggressive and loud. Mars has the potential to be quite a bully. On the other hand, Mars energy can be assertive, honoring the self without dishonoring others. How the energy is expressed depends on our choices.

The sign a planet is in establishes the parameters or priorities for its expression. Leo is a fire sign, motivated by ideals and a moral code. It is a sign of leadership and natural authority. The Lion is the recognized king of the jungle for a reason. Leo energy wants to be seen. It needs to be acknowledged and appreciated. Lower Leo expression can be arrogant, easily offended, demanding to be indulged and cosseted. No matter how much positive reinforcement or attention it receives it is never enough because this Leo is focused on external validation to try to fill the hole of its self doubt.

The higher expression of Leo is the responsible and honorable leader. This is the version you want to be around because they share their warmth and appreciation with those in their sphere. They take their task of role model seriously. Because they are comfortable with their personal power, they have no need to dominate. This Leo encourages and fosters empowerment in everyone.

Mars in Leo can adopt the wise and noble leader archetype or the petty dictator one.  Either way, getting needs met is the focus.

Uranus in Taurus

Uranus in Taurus: Uranus is an outer planet, meaning it does not usually have a strong effect on an individual unless it makes contact with a personal planet like Mars. The energy of Uranus is disruptive. It is an innovator, offering unique ideas that are way out of the box. It values freedom and rebels against restriction. Uranus needs a cause or it can use its disruptive energy in destructive ways. It has been compared to an earthquake or a lightening strike. It is difficult to anticipate how Uranus will express. That it will bring change is a given. How it will do so is anyone's guess.

Taurus is concerned with physical comfort and tangible manifestations. Taurus also is concerned with appropriate use of resources. It takes values seriously and usually aligns its actions to core values. It is a practical and grounded sign, not inclined to move quickly or embrace change. In its lower expression, Taurus is stubborn and unwilling to consider alternative view points. In its higher expression, it is disciplined and gentle.

Since 2018, Uranus has been moving through Taurus, shaking up the sign that prioritizes stability. Uranus doesn't care. It has been pointing out to all of us where we have had restrictions on our freedom to use our resources, financial and otherwise, in ways that serve us.

Uranus in Taurus can take the approach of embodying values and building a sustainable, supportive environment for ourselves. On the other hand, it can become increasingly frustrated with its current situation as the limits of it become evermore apparent and restrictive but changing anything is stubbornly resisted. For Uranus, the priority is the freedom to live life authentically.

Mars and Uranus: Volatility Squared

Mars and Uranus square each other every other year. Since Uranus entered Taurus, Mars has squared it three other times, in July 2019, July 2021 and June 2023. This will be the last time Mars will square Uranus in these signs as Uranus will be firmly in Gemini by the time Mars approaches it next. Still, this square is happening in the context of all the other shifts we have experienced in the past few months, including Pluto into Aquarius, Neptune and Saturn into Aries, and Jupiter into Cancer. Plus, as outer planets like Uranus prepare to change signs, they double down on any unresolved issues they are bringing up in the sign they are leaving.

This weekend holds the potential for clashes of will that can escalate rapidly. When strong fire meets earth, things can get scorched. The more aware and centered you are, the more you can access your best self to respond rather than react.

  • Pay attention to the messages your body is giving you. If something feels off, it probably is.

  • Uranus can be very activating to the nervous system, especially in a physically based sign like Taurus. Use your practices to keep your nervous system calm. If you don't have practices you use regularly, check out box breathing or simply explore using deep breaths and extending the exhale. Get outside, preferably into nature or spend time in a place with plants.

  • Anxiety and irritability require movement. Mars is an action oriented planet, so a walk, run, or some other activity that lets you break a sweat is a great start for dealing with uncomfortable emotions that might arise.

  • Not everyone will be able to manage their emotions this weekend. Give grace if you can, but there is no substitute for the power of strong boundaries that are gently enforced. Prioritize your peace.
